You’re at work, you’re slacking off, and your boss suddenly shows up. Don’t panic, just use a boss key to hide all active windows or use a hotkey to hide the active window. These are some of the features put at your disposal by Karsten Funk’s HMW application (HMV is short for Hide my Windows).

HMV does not have to be installed. To get it up and running, you need only download an archive, extract its contents, and run an executable. That’s quite handy. After all, you don’t want your boss looking at your installed applications and asking “what does this HMV application do?”

The main panel on HMV’s interface presents a list of running applications and open windows. Said list can be filtered according to these parameters: with changed state; in Alt – Tab; top-level; all; tray icons. A list of hotkeys is presented above this main panel; a list of actions is presented below this main panel. Everything that HMV can do is clearly presented on the interface.

Speaking of what HMV can do, here are the main bits: select a window and hide it, minimize it, maximize it, close it, reset its position, and more; use a hotkey to hide the active window; use a hotkey to show HMV; password protect access to HMV; use a b oss key to hide all active windows; set it so pressing the boss key locks windows or launches a certain application (Internet Explorer is launched by default; Yahoo.com is accessed within Internet Explorer, also by default); hide or show HMV’s icon in the system tray.

Since HMV is free software, you have all the time in the world to uncover everything that it can do.

Hide away any window you want. If you hide an application with HMW, the application will run silently in the background.

Pros

HMW is a portable application. The functionality HMW has to offer is very clearly presented on its interface. Change the default hotkeys with something else. Use HMW to hide, minimize, close applications. HMW is free software.

Cons

None that I could think of.
